Kai Tiaki is the incorrect spelling of Kaitiaki which is te reo for carer or guardian. The name Kai Tiaki was used from the time the magazine was first published in 1908, until it was officially changed to Kaitiaki in 2022, It is unclear whether the original name was adopted with the mandate of tangata whenua.
