Safety in Numbers examines the arguments for and against ratios. Utilizing survey data, interviews, and other original research, Suzanne Gordon, John Buchanan, and Tanya Bretherton weigh the cost, benefits, and effectiveness of ratios in California and the state of Victoria in Australia, the two places where RN staffing levels have been mandated the longest. They show how hospital cost cutting and layoffs in the 1990s created larger workloads and deteriorating conditions for both nurses and their patients-leading nursing organizations to embrace staffing level regulation.

Structural inequities and systemic racism in the healthcare system mean that M?ori and Pacific communities face a much greater health burden from COVID-19. Older people and those with pre-existing health conditions are also at greater risk. This should inform future policy decisions including prioritising groups for vaccination.

Monitoring nurses’ compliance is critical for prevention of healthcare-associated infections, but it’s far from straightforward. Healthcare-associated infections are the most common untoward incidents in healthcare. Such infections – known as HCAIs – include respiratory, urinary, surgical site, gastrointestinal and bloodstream infections, as well as clinical sepsis and many others.
16. Factors influencing hand hygiene compliance among nurses: An integrative review

The aim of this integrative review was to appraise primary research to identify factors influencing qualified nurses' hand hygiene compliance during patient care. The appraisal revealed five key themes, including time constraints and busyness; hand hygiene as self-protection for nurses and self-analysis of risk; awareness of being watched; converting knowledge into action and changing intention into behaviour; and social pressure and role modelling.

To identify recommendations to improve staff and patient adherence to hand hygiene best practices on inpatient psychiatric units, a survey of the literature was conducted to distill the most effective recommendations The literature suggests that strict hand hygiene and infection control processes can be implemented to the benefit of an inpatient psychiatric ward, but only with significant adjustments for staff and patients.

The current study explored compliance with hand hygiene and related influencing factors among nursing assistants (NAs) in nursing homes. Working experience and educational background were the two major influencing factors for hand hygiene.

20. Privacy Officer Toolkit Workshop
Privacy is a hot consumer topic – if you get privacy wrong, it can take a long time and a lot of work to try and regain the trust (and business) of your customers. The Privacy Act 2020 introduced mandatory reporting for serious privacy breaches, new obligations around transferring personal information to other countries, and gives the Privacy Commissioner increased compliance and enforcement powers.
