The perception of self-care for caregivers working in ARC during a pandemic in NZ

Members of the College of Gerontology Nursing are sought for a survey which aims to explore perceptions of self-care for caregivers working in ARC during a pandemic in NZ.

Participation in the study involves completing an online survey which may take up to 20 minutes.  There is also the opportunity to participate in a one-off interview.

The research forms a part of Masters Dissertation research being undertaken at the Centre of Post Graduate Nursing Studies, University of Otago, Christchurch.

Are you over 65 and living with dementia in the community?

We are seeking participants from the Auckland / Waikato regions and hoping that the more awareness of the research we get the more likely it is that we will reach
potential participants.

Research Detail

  • The principle investigator is Prof Vanessa (Ness) Burholt https://profiles.auckland.ac.nz/vanessa-burholt  and funding is from the Health Research Council
  • The research evolved from Ness’s experience as the primary care giver for her mum who was living with dementia.
  • During this time Ness and her mum struggled to manage mums continence issues, searching for help Ness realised that both the  research evidence and services for people living with dementia and continence challenges were few and far between and decided to do something about it.
  • This research building on expert opinion   https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9292568/  will provide the foundation for developing clinical guidelines and will contribute to a fuller understanding of impact of continence issues on people living with dementia (PLWD) and their carers.

Knowledge and Skills framework November 2014

The Knowledge and Skills framework for registered nurses has reached final draft stage and has been signed off at the Biennial General Meeting. This is a significant piece of work towards college status for the Gerontology Section. The next stage of development is to think about how this framework applies to all nurses that sometimes work with older adults. And the additional knowledge and skills needed by advanced gerontology nurses.
